Start with the complete bed, including its frame, rather than mattress dimensions alone.

Put the bed and wardrobe on the same plan

Mark routes to the door and window. Draw the wardrobe with its doors open and check drawer access. If you choose sliding doors, check actual access to the compartments. Do not assume they solve every space problem.

List what belongs in the bedroom and what can go elsewhere: seasonal clothing, bedding and suitcases. Confirm final dimensions and applicable room requirements with the designer.

Plan for quiet and light

Consider what is beyond each wall: a bathroom, laundry room, stairs or another bedroom. Discuss acoustic separation and service routes before construction. The room's position relative to the street is only part of the issue.

Decide how to darken the room during sleeping hours and how to air or ventilate it. Light controls and sockets must remain accessible after the headboard and bedside tables are fitted.

Check before approving the plan

Can you use the wardrobe without moving other objects?

Is there reading light that will not disturb the other person?

Is access to the window clear?

Can the bed be carried into the room?

Can the furniture be adapted if needs change?

Often forgotten: curtain positions, the laundry basket and sockets covered by the headboard. Confirm these on the furniture plan, rather than separately within each design discipline.

An attic bedroom: the bed fits, but can you stand up?

In a house with a ground floor and an attic level, ask for sections through the bed and the routes beside it. Check finished clear headroom where you sit on the edge, stand up and stand in front of the wardrobe. A mattress outline on a plan does not prove the room is comfortable to use.

Allow for the frame, headboard, finishes and any lowered elements. Discuss operation, shading and cleaning access for roof windows. Do not choose the bed solely from the available floor area.

Wardrobes and the things that do not fit

Measure long garments, suitcases and boxes you want to keep. A wardrobe under a slope may be long but offer little useful hanging space. Ask for a compartment layout and test access to the back.

Decide where to put clothes worn once, an extra blanket or a laundry basket. Without an allocated place, they will occupy a chair or the route beside the bed.

Controls that remain accessible after furnishing

Check lights and sockets against the final dimensions of bedside tables and the headboard. Discuss switching near the entrance and the bed. Decide where devices will charge without cables across walking routes.

Can you still reach the switches if you change the bed or bedside tables? If flexibility matters, discuss several furniture arrangements before fixing the positions.

Read next

Bathroom planning: details you will wish you had considered

Stairs and storage: moving between floors

All guides · Worksheet for the first discussion

Plan the complete bed, wardrobe access, lighting and attic headroom before finalising your bedroom.

["post-8851","page","type-page","status-publish
